Time for a spy thriller: Monsoon Ghost Image by Tom Vater.

The Monsoon Ghost Image: A Detective Maier Mystery (The Detective Maier Mystery Series Book 3) by [Vater, Tom]

I am going from cozy whodunit to dark and macabre. I am going from witty mystery to nightmare-inducing mayhem. German born Tom Vater recently released the third book in his Detective Maier Mystery Series.

Here's more...

When award-winning German conflict photographer Martin Ritter disappears in a boating accident in Thailand, the nation mourns the loss of a cultural icon. But a few weeks later, Detective Maier’s agency in Hamburg gets a call from Ritter’s wife. Her husband has been seen alive on the streets of Bangkok. Maier decides to travel to Thailand to find Ritter. But all he finds is trouble and a photograph.

As soon as Maier puts his hands on the Monsoon Ghost Image, the detective turns from hunter to hunted – the CIA, international business interests, a doctor with a penchant for mutilation and a woman who calls herself the Wicked Witch of the East all want to get their fingers on Martin Ritter’s most important piece of work – visual proof of a post 9/11 CIA rendition and the torture of a suspected Muslim terrorist on Thai soil. From the concrete canyons of the Thai capital to the savage jungles and hedonist party islands of southern Thailand, Maier and his sidekick Mikhail race against formidable foes to discover some of our darkest truths and to save their lives into the bargain.

Sounds like a wild ride. Are you game?

Happy Holidays, everyone! I'm getting back into writing! #CoverReveal

Back in 1985, I first started writing (and re-writing) a Time Travel novella, Jan of Cleveland. I tried it as a screenplay, then as a short radio play which I had aired on KFAI, public access radio Minneapolis/St. Paul in 1994. In 1999, a good friend and co-worker at the University of Minnesota told me about iUniverse and their $150 publishing program. I published it in 1999, then re-wrote it and re-published it in 2001. Back then, social media was in its infancy and you had to buy expensive display ads in magazines in order to get publicity.

I pretty much gave up on writing until 2011. I completely re-wrote Jan for about the seventh time and sold it on Amazon as an ebook. Since I only attracted trolls as reviewers, I gave up and got into blogging and text editing. After nearly nine years of this good writing experience, I am finishing up an eighth complete overhaul of the novella and having some book club friends critique it for me.

I am thinking it will be released next month. I have renamed it Maiden Voyage and have taken the pen name of Liz Meegan, my first and middle name. I am inspired by Ray Charles whose real name is Ray Robinson, but because of Sugar Ray Robinson, used his first and middle name.

Once it's released, I'll be Facebook sharing and Tweeting up a storm. As Natalie Wood sang in Inside Daisy Clover, You're Gonna Hear From Me!

What's the book about?

Married at eighteen, divorced at twenty‑eight, Sarah Blair reluctantly swaps her luxury lifestyle for a cramped studio apartment and a law firm receptionist job in the tired hometown she never left. With nothing much to show for the last decade but her feisty Siamese cat, RahRah, and some clumsy domestic skills, she’s the polar opposite of her bubbly twin, Emily—an ambitious chef determined to take her culinary ambitions to the top at a local gourmet restaurant . . .

Sarah knew starting over would be messy. But things fall apart completely when her ex drops dead, seemingly poisoned by Emily’s award-winning rhubarb crisp. Now, with RahRah wanted by the woman who broke up her marriage and Emily wanted by the police for murder, Sarah needs to figure out the right recipe to crack the case before time runs out. Unfortunately, for a gal whose idea of good china is floral paper plates, catching the real killer and living to tell about it could mean facing a fate worse than death—being in the kitchen!

Yikes!

Five Stars for Dead Air: A Talk Radio Mystery by Mary Kennedy.

I never publish book reviews unless I give them five stars.

So here goes...

This is a good book to relax with. The kind that keeps you reading and makes you laugh.

Maggie Walsh left her psychotherapy practice in Manhattan to be the star of a talk radio show in Cypress Grove, Florida. When the overweight self-help Guru is a guest on her show and ends up dead in his hotel room, one of his acolytes is a major suspect. She happens to be Maggie's roommate, Lark. And Rafe, the hot and spicy detective won't believe a word Lark says and firmly tells Maggie not to meddle. Funny and unexpectedly helpful is Maggie's mother Lola, who played a minor part in a soap opera, but never gives up hope of being a star. I laughed a lot and look forward to reading more. And there are three more books in the Talk Radio series.

Civil Unrest in 1920s India: A Greater God takes you there.

A Greater God (Superintendent Le Fanu Mysteries Book 4) by [Stoddart, Brian]

This is the fourth of Brian Stoddart's Le Fanu Series.

The British are slowly losing the grip on the subcontinent. The end of the colonial enterprise is in sight and the city on India’s east coast is teeming with intrigue.

Muslims are being murdered and communal tensions escalating as Superintendent Chris Le Fanu returns, reluctantly, to 1920s Madras from the Straits Settlements. He comes under fire, literally and figuratively, as more Muslims and policemen are killed by revolutionaries in clashes fomented by his boss, Inspector-General Arthur ‘The Jockey’ Jepson.

As the riots spread, Le Fanu’s trusted assistants – Mohammad Habibullah and Jackson Caldicott – disagree on both the origins and the handling of this new crisis. Le Fanu becomes further isolated as his only government allies, the Governor and the Chief Secretary, are being transferred away from Madras.

Even more pressure bears in on him when former housekeeper and lover, Ro McPhedran, falls critically ill in Hyderabad, and Jenlin Koh, his new love, is listed among those aboard a ship missing en route to India. Le Fanu’s entire professional and personal future is at risk as he confronts these challenges.

About the Author:

A Madras Miasma was the first in a series of books set in 1920s Madras in India, and featuring Superintendent Chris Le Fanu. The Pallampur Predicament was the second and A Straits Settlement has appeared in 2016 as the third.

That academic career took him all over the world including long periods in India, Malaysia, Canada, the Caribbean, China and Southeast Asia.

He also writes extensively for mainstream and new media as well as expert commentary for press, radio and television. Brian is also a cruise ship lecturer, specialising in international affairs and history.

In his spare time, he enjoys photography, reading (especially crime fiction),travel to new places, and listening to music, especially gypsy jazz
