Five Stars for Dead Air: A Talk Radio Mystery by Mary Kennedy.

I never publish book reviews unless I give them five stars.

So here goes...

This is a good book to relax with. The kind that keeps you reading and makes you laugh. 

Maggie Walsh left her psychotherapy practice in Manhattan to be the star of a talk radio show in Cypress Grove, Florida. When the overweight self-help Guru is a guest on her show and ends up dead in his hotel room, one of his acolytes is a major suspect. She happens to be Maggie's roommate, Lark. And Rafe, the hot and spicy detective won't believe a word Lark says and firmly tells Maggie not to meddle. Funny and unexpectedly helpful is Maggie's mother Lola, who played a minor part in a soap opera, but never gives up hope of being a star. I laughed a lot and look forward to reading more. And there are three more books in the Talk Radio series.

Civil Unrest in 1920s India: A Greater God takes you there.

This is the fourth of Brian Stoddart's Le Fanu Series.

About the Author: 

A Madras Miasma was the first in a series of books set in 1920s Madras in India, and featuring Superintendent Chris Le Fanu. The Pallampur Predicament was the second and A Straits Settlement has appeared in 2016 as the third.

A Straits Settlement was longlisted for the 2017 Ngaio Marsh Award for Best New Zealand Crime Novel.

A Greater God is the fourth in the Le Fanu series and appeared in 2018.

He has published extensively in non-fiction, too. A House in Damascus: Before the Fall recounts his experience of living in an old house in the Old City of Damascus immediately before the outbreak of the war in Syria. That memoir became an Amazon #1 in Middle East Travel, and won gold and silver medals at the 2012 e-Book Awards for Creative Non-Fiction and Travel respectively.

Brian Stoddart also works as an international higher education consultant on programs in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Syria and Jordan as well as in the UK and USA. This work follows a successful career as university researcher, teacher and senior executive which culminated in a term as Vice-Chancellor and President of La Trobe University in Australia where he is now an Emeritus Professor. That academic career took him all over the world including long periods in India, Malaysia, Canada, the Caribbean, China and Southeast Asia.

He also writes extensively for mainstream and new media as well as expert commentary for press, radio and television. Brian is also a cruise ship lecturer, specialising in international affairs and history.

Aunt Sally's Debut: Two delightful rhyming books by Jean Peel.

Aunt Sally is a curious cat, always getting into something, especially trouble. Author Jean Peel has published the first two of her rhyming, illustrated Aunt Sally books. There will be a total of nine books in the series.

They learned to keep out of the farmer's way.

There were lots of places to hide and play.

The kittens soon grew tired of their games

When her brother curled up to have a nap

Aunt Sally ran off without thought of mishap.

Being an avid reader all her life, Jean has always been a casual writer, and only recently finished her ninth Aunt Sally manuscript. At the request of her sons, and perhaps for the benefit of her grandchildren, Jean is currently documenting her own memories and those of her mother; at least the ones that she can remember.

Opening herself to the world of creativity, Jean has also become addicted to card making, and more recently painting with oils and acrylics. Yay! A Cozy Mystery on Mackinac Island! Tandem Demise by Duffy Brown

During the Summer of 1974, I sold fudge on Mackinac Island. I was 19, made lots of friends and had fun. If I didn't have time for breakfast, I would eat a slice of chocolate walnut fudge and have a cup of coffee. I could get away with that then.  My parents came to visit and fell in love with it. I felt sad in August when I had to take the ferry back to the mainland. Whenever I hear Elton John's Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, it reminds me of that day. So, when I saw that Tandem Demise takes place on Mackinac Island, my ears pricked up.

So, here's the synopsis:

After solving two murders, bike shop owner Evie Bloomfield thought life on Mackinac Island would settle into boredom until she finds out Nate Sutter, island police chief and once-upon-a-time under cover cop is on the run. Some badass guys from Nate’s Detroit days think he stole money from them in a champagne smuggling operation and now they’re headed to the island to get their loot. Evie is determined to help Nate because he’s a good cop, Nate is determined to keep interfering Evie and island locals out of harms way, and the crooks are determined to get their money.

To add to the island’s problems there’s a dead guy on the dock and the new wedding planner is more interested in playing bedroom bingo than ordering bridal bouquets. 

With the help of Fiona, Evie’s BFF and local newspaper editor, Evie is determined to prove Nate innocent, figure out how champagne smuggling, bodies on the dock and a bad wedding planner are tied together and not wind up taking a long walk off a short pier herself.
