Aunt Sally's Debut: Two delightful rhyming books by Jean Peel.

Aunt Sally is a curious cat, always getting into something, especially trouble. Author Jean Peel has published the first two of her rhyming, illustrated Aunt Sally books. There will be a total of nine books in the series.

Here is an excerpt of How Aunt Sally Got Her Name:

This story you're about to hear
Will hopefully please, so do not fear.
It's how Aunt Sally was given her name
By a little girl called Matilda-Jane.

The story begins a long time ago,
On the opening day of the annual show,
When a mother cat left her two kittens to play
So she could go hunting to find some prey.

Their home was in a farmer's shed.
The bales of hay made a comfy bed.
They learned to keep out of the farmer's way.
There were lots of places to hide and play.

The kittens soon grew tired of their games
And ended up calling each other names.
When her brother curled up to have a nap
Aunt Sally ran off without thought of mishap.

Mrs. Peel’s second Aunt Sally book is How Aunt Sally Went to the Zoo.

And here is the book cover:

About the Author:

Being an avid reader all her life, Jean has always been a casual writer, and only recently finished her ninth Aunt Sally manuscript. At the request of her sons, and perhaps for the benefit of her grandchildren, Jean is currently documenting her own memories and those of her mother; at least the ones that she can remember.

Opening herself to the world of creativity, Jean has also become addicted to card making, and more recently painting with oils and acrylics. She continues to bring more of her Aunt Sally stories to life, whilst working on a novel she’s had sitting on her writing desk for some time; that is, when she’s not overcome with writer’s block.

Yay! A Cozy Mystery on Mackinac Island! Tandem Demise by Duffy Brown

Tandem Demise: A Cycle Path Mystery by [Brown, Duffy , Brown, Duffy]

During the Summer of 1974, I sold fudge on Mackinac Island. I was 19, made lots of friends and had fun. If I didn't have time for breakfast, I would eat a slice of chocolate walnut fudge and have a cup of coffee. I could get away with that then.  My parents came to visit and fell in love with it. I felt sad in August when I had to take the ferry back to the mainland. Whenever I hear Elton John's Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, it reminds me of that day. So, when I saw that Tandem Demise takes place on Mackinac Island, my ears pricked up.

So, here's the synopsis:

After solving two murders, bike shop owner Evie Bloomfield thought life on Mackinac Island would settle into boredom until she finds out Nate Sutter, island police chief and once-upon-a-time under cover cop is on the run. Some badass guys from Nate’s Detroit days think he stole money from them in a champagne smuggling operation and now they’re headed to the island to get their loot. Evie is determined to help Nate because he’s a good cop, Nate is determined to keep interfering Evie and island locals out of harms way, and the crooks are determined to get their money.

To add to the island’s problems there’s a dead guy on the dock and the new wedding planner is more interested in playing bedroom bingo than ordering bridal bouquets.

With the help of Fiona, Evie’s BFF and local newspaper editor, Evie is determined to prove Nate innocent, figure out how champagne smuggling, bodies on the dock and a bad wedding planner are tied together and not wind up taking a long walk off a short pier herself.

Lady Justice and the Mystery Mansion by [Thornhill, Robert]

I can't help thinking about the famous Scooby Do episode where they solved a mystery at a haunted house. Except there is no Great Dane who sort of talks to help this couple. Walt and Maggie want to restore the mansion they bought to its former glory. They didn't know about the curse. This is one of many Lady Justice books by Robert Thornhill.

Click here to watch the mansion owners unravel the mystery.

Twice as Fatal: Perfect for football season! And it's $3.99.

I was just feeling happy about my favorite kind of day: a cool, clear, crisp October day. Sunny, but with just the right amount of warmth when the sun is up. This is my favorite time of year with marching bands, autumn leaves and pumpkin muffins. With the book I'm blogging about, I need to slip out of the rosy descriptions and talk about the down side of the season, namely a college football star being blackmailed. This isn't the only tough assignment for Jarvis Mann, P.I.

Here's more:

Ray Malone is a promising college football star whose career is derailed by injuries. When he disappears, close friend Jarvis is recruited by Ray’s father to locate him. After tracking him down a video is sent of Ray with the warning of it going public, threatening his career and those that love him.
Case two has landlord Kate Tanner hiring Jarvis to gather evidence against her cheating, thieving husband so she can divorce him. As Jarvis investigates he learns of the husband’s connection to a powerful man, with a dangerously perverted agenda that crosses into Kate’s life with deadly consequences.
Across the Rocky Mountain Front Range Jarvis tries to balance both cases, each dragging him deeper into different sleazy underworlds, jeopardizing him, his clients and their families. With danger and death all around him, he somehow must rescue everyone before this fatal business claims the lives of all involved, his life and the one he is growing to love.

Seeking Asylum.

migration stories

Yvette Grimm comes to Australia on a tourist visa which is running out. She does not want to 'get married for a Green Card' as we say in the United States. A psychic said she would meet the father of her children by the time she's 30 and she's 29. Will she be able to stay? At what cost?

I went on author Isobel Blackthorn's website and read about Asylum. While doing so, I came across a few paragraphs on why Isobel wrote the book. I found it quite interesting, so I'm sharing it with you.

WHY I WROTE THE NOVEL ASYLUM

Asylum, started life in 2012 and is semi-autobiographical in that the protagonist, Yvette Grimm is a British-born visa overstayer seeking refuge in Australia and so was I. Although that is where the similarities end.
Migration stories are often painful and fraught, and Yvette’s is typical of what migrants go through when they try to sidestep the rules. Yvette’s story is juxtaposed with the conditions asylum seekers arriving by boat face in offshore camps. The story is ironic, Yvette’s suffering of her own making and really rather trivial in the wider scheme of things.
At the time of writing I was involved in helping asylum seekers, especially those who had made it to Australia on bridging visas. It was a gnawing sense of injustice that caused me to keep working on Asylum, motivated by a wish to make a contribution in raising awareness of the issue. Although it is not a book about asylum seekers. It is a story of belonging and alienation, a coming of age story.
