My review of Being a Vampire in Retail Sucks - Five stars!

Vampire detective Scarlet Summers has a debt to pay; werewolves came to the rescue in a previous case and now she’s going undercover. Three werewolf girls, who are all co-workers, have gone missing. Now Scarlet has to work in a supernatural retail store in order to solve the case. If you think rude customers are hard to deal with, just imagine if they have supernatural powers!

Jessica Samuels has married her real life experience, working at a jewelry counter, with the world of vampires, werewolves, witches and necromancers. In doing so, her storyline carries you along and is very engaging. Whether you work in retail and are curious about a supernatural bargain store or you are into the paranormal, this is a good read!

Chris Roy on Villains. And his upcoming release - Her Name is Mercie.

I came across this posting on villains  on my Facebook page and wanted to pursue it further. I remember a reviewer for the New Yorker magazine saying that Disney villains were always infinitely more interesting than the puff balls of virtue that oppose them. The reviewer was referring to 101 Dalmatians.

Chris discussed villains in a guest post on The Writer's Thread. Here are a few experts:

Good villains are obvious. Better ones mysterious. Stealthy. I’ve found that the great ones are an Idea, those that you can relate to, have you agreeing with, then dash your passion with inner conflict.

The stealthiest of villains can be a story’s setting. One that draws you in with familiarity, or empathy from emotional attachment shared by the character – then it wants to eat you. The unknown, fear from not understanding why this place was so lovely one moment and the next terrifying, induces horror.

Chris Roy has a new book coming out: Her Name is Mercie. It's available for pre-order.

What's it about?

Mercie Hillbrook lives a simple, quiet life working as a gas station attendant. Then her parents are killed. Her home is taken. The people responsible are excused for just doing their job. When an attempt to get justice her way lands her in trouble with the law, Mercie realizes she still has something to lose: her own life.

Ivory's Familiars - A totally different point of view!

I have blogged about many books with witches as the main characters. Some are aware of their powers; some aren't, but how about a book told partially from the point of view of  familiars?

Now, that's something you don't read every day.

From the synopsis: Ronan, Vaughn, and Seth are witches’ familiars – sharing their souls with the black panther. The three of them are predators, born to be companion and protector to their witches. Over the generations, their coven’s numbers have dwindled to the brink of extinction. With no witch left to serve, they now work as bodyguards. None of them are prepared for the powerful connection they have with their newest client. She isn’t a witch – they sense no magic in her. But could she be something else entirely? Something none of them believed was even possible? Their mate.
